46' Pilothouse Arrives in Mauritius: Making a Serious Statement

Blog Details

I first took the call in the summer of 2025 from Lewis, who was fishing hard on the Indian Ocean and taking a beating from the heavy swell and rough chop - he wanted something fast capable and enclosed - the 46' Pilothouse was firmly in his crosshairs to target fish in The Soudan Banks.

From a one-off, totally custom colour scheme to some serious fishing customisations, this build would be the most special factory edition yet and just wait until you see what he raised with her...

The Build

This would be the second 46' Pilothouse that I've had the pleasure to build for a customer and the spec Lewis chose to go for was off the scale - loaded with special edition options, making for all the bells and whistles.

When we build a boat for a customer the very first thing we do is spray a mould with gelcoat - normally for a customer, this means that they choose from some of our standard colours and when their build slot opens we pull that colour from stock and spray away. Not for Lewis. The colour had to match his rapidly expanding fleet. Working with a colour expert, Lewis supplied us with the colour that we would have to match.

Invincible works with the best suppliers in the industry, and thanks to the efforts of our Engineering team a new line item was created for procurement and an approved sample match was provided by gelcoat supplier - the result was an outstanding colourway for a very special 46' Pilothouse.

We didn't stop there - if there was an option Lewis had to have it, he placed rod holders just where he would need them,  extra electric reel outlets - a feature that we'll write more about later - fully customised SeaDek throughout the floor and gunwale, painted antenna package and a Release Battle Saddle for fighting Indian Ocean Marlin - the build was going to be off the charts incredible!

Shipping

The shipping route was complex to go directly to Mauritius, with several transhipment and break bulk options, it was proving to not be straightforward to

We secured an excellent RoRo service from Florida to Réunion Island through James at Warrant Marine. From there, it was just a short 100-mile run across to Mauritius for final collection.

Upon arrival in Réunion, Lewis and his good fishing friend Stu unwrapped the beast, revealing the stunning custom OpporTunaty Blue hull gleaming under the tropical sun.

 | New Boat day - it doesn't get much better than this!

Less than 10 days after delivery in Mauritius, the new 46' Pilothouse OpporTunaty 3 proved her worth in spectacular fashion.

Lewis landed an IGFA All-Tackle World Record-Beating Ruby Snapper weighing 31 kg (68 lbs 5.5 oz)—surpassing the previous record of 30.4 kg (67 lbs). [Editor's note - it was caught on an electric reel, so didn't oficially count]

Bottom fishing off the coast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, this incredible catch happened almost immediately after taking delivery. What a statement for the boat's capabilities right out of the gate!

Now we come to the true meat and potatoes of why Lewis had to have the 46' Pilothouse.

There exists a place, a magical place, like lightning in a bottle, 125 miles north of Mauritius, strong, fertile fishing.  There's Marlin, Yellofin, Doggies, and monsters on the bottom. 20 miles across and when you're there - you pretty much have it all to yourself....

The Soudan Banks

To get there is no small feat - the Indian Ocean is notoriously volitile. Landlocked from the North. Completely open to the south all the way to Antarctica.

This creates a "pressure cooker" effect where the atmospheric energy is trapped and reversed seasonally, while massive swells roll in from the Southern Ocean unimpeded.

Big ground swell can quickly meet lateral or opposing wind swell, and a calm day can turn quickly. Planning is everything and always requires a backup plan.

The few that do make the trip are generally sport fishers. Most center consoles find themselves either quickly overwhelmed by the ocean to the point where it becomes either downright uncomfortable or short on range. But the sportfishers are large and sluggish. They're slow, so fishing trips are extended by a couple of days (unless you can helicopter in from your mothership like Badcompany's Tony Hsieh!) and many get left on the drawing board.

This is where we've seen an explosion of usage in larger center consoles. 100 miles plus offshore in a day becomes doable. You just cover more ground more quickly. Couple that with the magic carpet ride of an Invincible Catamaran, on what feels like a cushion of air, and you're away.

It took Lewis less than a week to take "The Beast" to Soudan. The fishing delivered. The boat delivered.

Soudan Banks Catch

 | Two nights and three days of fishing The Soudan Banks - Team OpporTunaty went all in.

I had to see it for myself - so the following week I flew out.

I have the incredible privilege of travelling to some of the most incredible places in the world, from the dizzy heights and lights in Dubai to remote islands with little to no infrastructure.

Mauritius blew me away.

It's tropical, like very green. Having been in the Gulf, which is effectively a desert, for a few days this was very apparent!

What's also nice is that despite being an island, it has a mainland feel to it. Mauritius is large enough that you can get everything you need and most of what you want - pretty reasonably too.

The Fishing

Not a week since the last trip, and me turning up on Lewis' doorstep, Team OpporTunaty loaded up "The Beast" with tackle, lures, breakfast, lunch, dinner and all manners of fuel to power us through three days and two nights of some of the most hardcore fishing I've ever done.

The team would be me, Bluefin Tuna legends Lee and Alan from GIbraltar, Captain Stu, local Stu and of course, owner Lewis.

Out the door at 4am to be off the dock before first light and hit the open ocean hard, we head north. Mauritius is just as beautiful from the water, volcanic islands no more than a mile across rise vertically from the ocean.

The ocean is calm, smooth as silk we're flying towards our destination.

Not an hour underway, we spot birds and start to fish. We pull in some mahi - such a fun fish to fight and a great start to the day and a fast and fun frenzy.

As we start to close in on The Soudan Banks we drop our pace, set up the dredge, let out the lures and we're trolling for marlin. In what feels like no time at all a reel starts to scream as the line is quickly drawn from the drag. It's on. Captain Stu & Stu work together, Capt Stu keeps the tension while Stu straps on the Black Magic. Quickly, Stu locks in on the fish and starts to fight. I grab my phone and start to film. It is on.

A brilliant Blue Marlin pierces the surface and launches into the air off our port side, Stu winds furiously on the wheel before the fish takes more line from the drag. The fish relents and Stu winds on, unfortunately

I replay the video and in my excitement, I've missed the marlin jumping! The euphoria is high among the crew and we press on - we've not yet had breakfast.

Onto the banks and we're on to tuna, it feels like the day has barely started and we're on our third fish - its just awesome.

Late afternoon and we pull a big dogtooth tuna quickly followed by a decent wahoo - it is on on on!

The night rolls around and we break out the Lingred Pitmans start to deep drop.

The haul never stops - we keep pulling fish upon fish and it doesn't relent - its absolutely awesome!

Special mention here goes to Alan for the fight of his life, on what must of been the smallest jiggiing rod we had on board he's on something big. Capt. Stu heads over for support. It becomes apparant to us all that he has something BIG. We all stop what we're doing and cheer him on. As the fish nears the boat there's always that tension that we might lose it, there's a moment of panic about where it is as it appears to have risen into the tunnel of the catamaran.

Alan releases the line and a ginormous goliath grouper floats out just off our bow - we go wild! The fish of the trip!
